In a test of glasses at seven theaters in New York, New Jersey,Adidas, and Connecticut, the magazine found that none of the frames had been sterilized before re-use — including glasses that were handed out in plastic wrappers.
The germs uncovered on the glasses run the gamut of nasty junk you don’t want in your system, including bugs that cause “conjunctivitis, skin infections, food poisoning, sepsis and pneumonia.” Staph was also uncovered on one of the glasses, “not something to take lightly” according to the Good Housekeeping research arm’s director of home appliances and cleaning products. (Now there’s a job title!)
But is any of this really dangerous? ABC News polled doctors, and the good news is that Good Housekeeping’s fears may be overblown. As one doctor noted, “We do not live in a sterile environment,” and even the dangerous-sounding staph germ is omnipresent everywhere we go.
Another doctor noted that “if you swab the popcorn box, arm rests on the seats, door handles leading into the theater and the coinage you get in change at the concession stand, you'll find the same distribution of germs,Louis Vittion,” and that there’s nothing to worry about until there’s an outbreak of a real disease.
But it’s the wearing of these glasses on our faces for extended periods of time that probably has people a bit addled. The door handle can always be dealt with by the old pull-the-sleeve-over-your-hand trick, but there’s no easy solution for what to do with dirty glasses that sit on your nose for two hours. And really, if glasses are handed out in a plastic wrapper, shouldn’t they actually be clean?
Bottom line: There’s probably nothing to be alarmed about, but if you’re really concerned about the cleanliness of 3-D glasses, you’ll probably need to clean them yourself with a disinfectant wipe before you put them on. Failing that, there are plenty of perfectly watchable 2-D movies that require no special eyewear still making the rounds.

It’s bad enough that you actually had to sit through "Alice in Wonderland" in 3-D, now Good Housekeeping is asking what kind of disgusting bugs you might have picked up from putting used glasses on your head.
